Narva Land – Photographs from Eastern Estonia

Eyes are not on the borderland. People from the center are looking inwards, to the center itself, or over the borderland to other centers. A borderland is interesting to the center only when there is an external threat. Histories of borderlands consist of changing rulers and overmarching soldiers. Their turbulent history cause unique development, ruins, decadence, and one-of-a-kind atmosphere.
We have experienced the borderland atmosphere as visually interesting in our photographic trips to the Narva region in Eastern Estonia. The population of this region is mostly inherited from the Soviet era in Estonia. Between 1945 and 1991 over a half million people moved from other parts of Soviet Union to Estonia and a majority of them came to Eastern Estonia to the service of the heavy industry. Most of these people have not tried or passed the test in Estonian language and history, which is a requirement for getting the Estonian citizenship.
We did two trips in October 2009 and May 2010 to Narva and its environment. Our objective was to capture the remains from the history of this almost completely Russian-speaking region that is now a part of the EU. We visited the holiday paradise of Soviet pioneers and working heroes in the beaches of Narva-Jõesuu. We saw the remains of heavy industry created by the oil shale and the Soviet architecture in the industrial towns of Narva, Kohtla-Järve and Sillamäe. We met a region where the built environment grows apart from current time and where the inhabitants do not speak the language spoken by the administration. We admired and were horrified of the beauty of the abandoned and the decline of the heavy industry. We interpreted what we saw and recorded it visually.
Our purpose is not to present the reality as it is. The photograph selects, crops, emphasizes and isolates things, phenomena, and objects. Our purpose is neither to document or write history. Instead we want to present our own view of what happens in a borderland when the built environment and time as social construction are not in sync. Alienation from time, ideas, and administrative systems is tangible in the Narva region. We present our own interpretation of it in this series.
Narvan mailla – valokuvia itäisestä Virosta
Katseet suuntautuvat poispäin rajaseudusta. Hallinnollisen ja väestöllisen keskuksen asukkaat katsovat sisäänpäin, itseensä tai rajaseudun yli toisiin keskuksiin. Rajaseudusta tulee keskukselle kiinnostava vain sotilaallisen tai muun ulkoapäin tulevan uhan syntyessä. Rajaseutujen historia koostuu vaihtuvista vallanpitäjistä ja sotilaiden ylimarsseista. Historian pyörteissä, keskushallinnon unohtamina rajaseudut kehittyvät omalla tavallaan, mikä synnyttää poikkeamia totutusta, raunioita ja dekadenssia, omanlaistaan tunnelmaa.
Olemme kokeneet tämän rajaseudun tunnelman visuaalisesti kiinnostavana kuvausmatkoillamme Narvan alueella Itä-Virossa. Tämän alueen väestö on suurimmaksi osaksi perua Viron neuvostokaudelta. Vuosien 1945 ja 1991 välillä muutti Viroon muualta Neuvostoliitosta yli puoli miljoonaa ihmistä ja eniten heitä tuli juuri Itä-Viroon raskaan teollisuuden palvelukseen. Suurella osalla näistä neuvostoaikana muuttaneista ihmisistä on edelleen suorittamatta vironkielen ja historian koe, joka on edellytys Viron kansalaisuuden saamiseksi.
Teimme lokakuussa 2009 ja toukokuussa 2010 kuvausmatkat Narvaan ja lähiseudulle. Tavoitteemme oli kuvata tämän lähes täysin venäjänkielisen alueen historian jäänteitä: neuvostoajan pioneerien ja työnsankareiden lomaparatiisia Narva-Jõesuun hiekkarannoilla, palavankiven synnyttämää raskasta energia- ja kemianteollisuutta ja neuvostoarkkitehtuuria Narvan, Kohtla-Järven ja Sillamäen teollisuuskaupungeissa. Kohtasimme alueen, jossa rakennettu ympäristö etääntyy ajasta ja jossa asukkaat eivät puhu valtaapitävien kieltä. Ihastelimme ja kauhistelimme hylätyn kauneutta ja raskaan teollisuuden rappiota. Tulkitsimme näkemäämme ja tallensimme sen visuaalisesti.
Tarkoituksemme ei ole esittää todellisuutta sellaisena kuin se on. Valokuva valikoi, rajaa, korostaa ja eristää asiat, ilmiöt ja esineet. Tarkoituksemme ei ole myöskään dokumentoida tai kirjoittaa historiaa. Sen sijaan haluamme esittaa oman näkemyksemme siitä mitä tapahtuu rajaseudulla kun ihmisen rakentama ympäristö ja aika sosiaalisena konstruktiona eivät etene samassa tahdissa. Vieraantuminen ajasta, aatteista ja hallinnollisista järjestelmistä on Narvan alueella käsin kosketeltavaa. Esitämme siitä oman tulkintamme tässä näyttelyssä.
